After the day prevention and detection of skin cancer, see how screening to treatment is taken care of these diseases. Carcinoma frequently more serious melanoma, research is progressing day by day. Our cards with the Institut Curie.

Screening

Early detection is one of the major advantages in the treatment of melanoma. To do this, dermatologists organize every year in spring, a national day of free screening, whose next edition will take place May 17, 2001. In 1998, 15 000 people have benefited from this screening and 30 000 in 1999. This day allows one hand to detect the presence of skin cancer in some individuals (65 melanoma and 275 carcinomas were detected during the last 2 days), but also to inform on suspicious signs that should encourage them to consult a physician.

The symbols must be wary

Melanoma: detection and treatment areas of onset of melanoma does not correspond to parts of the body most exposed to sunlight. They are also different by gender: women, the disease is formed mainly on the legs, then it appears particularly on the trunk in men.

Melanoma usually presents as a pigmented stain (brown or black) flat. In 15 to 20% of cases, it appears at a mole whose appearance changes.

Rule of the ABCDE

Any change in shape, color or size of a mole should be a warning sign.

Asymmetry: only a part of mole changes in appearance and differs greatly from the rest.

Border: the edges of the mole becomes irregular pigmentation that can sometimes invade the skin.

Coloring: The color of the mole loses its homogeneity, depigmented areas appear even lighter gray, red or blue.

Diameter: the size of the mole increases (melanoma generally larger than 6 mm).

Escalation or gradual evolution: dynamic test of the evolution of a birthmark, other than the above criteria.

The appearance of a melanoma can vary significantly but there are often one or more of these characteristics. A regular review under this rule should allow to detect quickly any harbinger of the possible presence of a melanoma

These criteria, which should lead to a doctor, can be stored using the ABCDE rule.

Treatment of melanoma

Melanoma develops due to genetic modification of a melanocyte, melanin-producing cells located in the epidermis. There is firstly an uncontrolled division of melanocytes to form a brown or black lesion that appears on the surface of the skin.
